Persistence and Perseverance


Probably more than any other business, I would say that everyone who is successful in the Internet Marketing business has demonstrated the quality of persistence. If persistence can be defined as “keep on keeping on,” that fits successful internet marketers to a “T’

So what is it about persistence and perseverance that has so caught the attention of man down through the ages? Because it works, that’s what.

Here is something from Ray Kroc the founder of McDonalds:

Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful individuals with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

There it is right there. No matter what happens, you are not beaten until you say you are beaten.  The absolute worst thing that you can do is give up. You will never forgive yourself.

Vince Lombardi the great football coach:

Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit.

So don’t quit. Most of us here, me included, are struggling to make a go of it on the internet with varying degrees of success. The examples of people who have made it are all around us so it can be done. Somebody said the other day “a Guru is just someone who started before you.” I believe that.

Here is Hank Aaron, who a lot of people think was the best hitter in baseball:

My motto was always to keep on swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging.

Keep swinging. We all know that it is the answer, don’t we?  That is persistence. How about perseverance? According to Newt Gingrich:

Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.

I am sure many of us have spent hours trying to do something which is actually pretty easy, I know I have many times, but when you battle through it and it gets done the way you want it done, you forget how long it took. But if you give up on it, you feel frustrated and upset. That is the time to come back and get it done.

Donald Trump:

If you want something done you’ll find a way. If you don’t want something done you’ll find an excuse.

So there you are. Just remember:

As you make your way through life,

Let this ever be your goal.

Keep your eye upon the doughnut

And not upon the hole.

  3. Hi Brian, good post. The worst thing about giving up is that in a year or two you’ll ask yourself “what if?”.

    I have no intention of asking myself that. I remember years ago saying to my youngest brother “If it’s worth starting it’s worth finishing” and that is how i look at things.

    I don’t know why – but your Ray Kroc quote reminded me of one by Theodore Roosevelt…
    “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly.     So yeah – we should all keep on keeping on :)

    I completely agree with you on persistence and perseverance. Many times in life things become hard and it is easy to give up. I am not sure who originated this comment, but it fits with your post: “when the going gets tough, the tough keep going”!

    Since we are all in the Internet Marketing Journey together, let’s give each other a push when we need it and a little encouragement will not hurt either. With that being said, you’re doing a great job and I will see you at the top of the mountain!

    Excellent post. You have given some great words of advice. Your right it is not easy to make money on the net despite many people preaching the opposite. I have just lost a large sum of money on a Network marketing venture it would be all too easy just to give up and walk away. Persistence is what we all need, to be successful and I love the analogy of keep on swinging the bat. The 100 challenge is a great way to share ideas and get to know new people.
    As mentioned above you just need to find your “Why” if that is strong enough you can over come any obstacle. Good luck!

    A very Motivational Post you have here.

    I LOVE it when you wrote “A Guru is just someone who started before you.”

    And the Guru never quit til he become a Guru.

    Persistence and perseverance are easier said than done. But there seems to be No Other ways we can achieve our goals without these 2Ps you post on your title. But I proposed to add one more to make it 3Ps as follow:

    Persistence, Perseverance and Patience.

  15. Brian,

    I have considered changing careers on several occasions during the last 10 years but have persisted because I enjoyed a lot of the elements of the job even if I didn\’t enjoy the management. Now, just recently new management has taken over and the place is so much different and it is such a joy to work there.

    I know this is a little different from what you mentioned, but I persisted all the same because it is something I love doing. In the end I outlasted the boss and it has turned out for the best.

  21. Always good to read inspiring thoughts Brian.

    I’m in the UK, so I haven’t heard of the Baseball player Hank Aaron, but I like his “keep on swinging” philosophy. I run marathons and my mantra is; whatever happens don’t walk, just “keep on running”.

    I walked in a few marathons, but it doesn’t help, and then walking became an option and therefore a weakness. It took me a couple of years to get rid of that weakness, now when I get to the marathon start line I know I will run the whole way.

    This just about sums up my online career…persistence & perseverance.

    There were many times when I just didn’t get it, I was frustrated and annoyed and sometimes sounded off – but I kept going.

    I went past the point of no return after I’d sold my car and paid to do the Masterclass Course…so there was no way that I was going to quit…

    I’m part time these days and still working hard and with more persistence & perseverance than ever… one day Rodney, we’ll be millionaires ;)

    How true is that.
    I come across hurdles all the time. I had to learn to jump.
    I was on copyblogger earlier today. Brian Clark used the example of an ocean liner in his post today. A ship sets it’s course, it doesn’t quit at the first sign of choppy waters, it may deviate a little but for the most part it completes it’s journey.
    This just sums up starting a internet business so well.

  30. Hi Brian,

    We all have times in our lives online or offline when we are trying to succeed in a particular area of our lives and hit a brick wall. You have to learn from things and move on. Many times while I have been online my family particular my wife does not really understand it all and thinks I am wasting my time.

    Many of use will fall into the bracket of average wage, and we are trying to use the internet to supplement our income or create our own home business. Well If it takes me 5 years online to be making a 6 figure sum. I am prepared to stay here for the long haul.

    As I know that I will not be making that sort of money offline. This is a marathon and not a sprint and the quote “a Guru is just someone who started before you” is so right.

    So keep at it and you will make it a success.

    Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, still wear it sometimes too.

    I know many guys who constantly work to achieve their goals and they all have something in common? Success!

    I have varied success across the internet and believe I could do with a kick up the arse sometimes (and I do it) to get my motivation back.

    I will never stop perusing my goals, but all work and no play?? We all have to find the balance or we get tired and sick of what we do.

    I am part of the 100 comment challenge and I intend to visit 5 blogs a day. Yours was the first today and, it made me laugh because it was a perfect fit for what I am going through at the moment. Trying to write a guide to facebook is a nightmare, the closer you look the bigger Facebook gets! I was beginning to weaken and consider my options, thanks you have given me back my drive to get it done.

    I used to think that the gurus had some mystic presence and were different from us, however having met some at my first event this year. You realise that they just like you and me, thus the excuse that they are somehow special is removed.

    As you said, they all had persisitence. They found a system and stuck to it until it turned the corner, or as Sterling Valentine my mentor says, it hits its sweet spot.

    Too many people become beaten and disillusioned in the things they want to do and achieve in life…and don’t even realise it is actually themselves who are to blame because instead of giving themselves permission to succeed they instead allow themselves to fail.

    Yes a lot of people who do fail will blame themselves forever more, but more people still will blame anything that comes to mind, anything and anyone can be at fault but themselves.

    It took me a while to realise the ’5 minute instant success business’ didnt actually exist for ‘newbies’, and after getting over my disappointment I became totally committed to making it on-line and set myself to the task of achieving it, for many of us it is a long road to becoming established marketers and earning a living from it, but all the hard work and frustration is worth it in the end because of the changes it brings to your life and the freedom you gain from being able to ‘live life on your terms’.

    So Here’s to all the hard work and the benefits it will bring!

  38. Great advice Brian. It certainly helps to remember people who did not take no for an answer like the authors of Chicken Soup and J K Rowling. They got turned down many times before they finally scooped it!

    Your article really hits a chord with me, totally inspirational. I can’t help but agree with you how important persistence and perseverance is, whether you are an Internet Marketer or not. It might take years or even decades before we succeed in anything, but as long as we persevere, success will be ours someday. Though I may not be already successful in what I’m doing, I’m also not someone who surrenders easily and say “I quit!”. Hence I know the day will come when I can sack my boss and enjoy the financial and time freedom I’m yearning for.     Incidentally when I think of Ray Kroc and McDonalds I think of systems – if ever a company has succeeded on getting their systems right it’s McDonalds.

    Through all my persistence over the last 10+ years one of the secrets, or maybe I should say realisations, has been the need to have rock solid systems in my internet marketing business.

    There comes a time when your hobby turns into a business.

    Can you take 2 weeks out of your business and see it run normally?

    I believe most people make the break through when they understand they are running a business and it isn’t simply a website.

    I loved the quotes from Hank Aaron (one of my favorite all time players – I’m an Atlanta Braves fan) and Newt Gingrich.

    Sometimes we need to hear/read these of quotes to remind us about the things we already know but sometimes do not apply.

    I can envision Donald Trump actually saying the quote you referenced then following it up with a “You’re Fired!”.

    Great Quotes!!

    In my early years I learned to quit. I learned to listen to the negative people said to me and do what they say, I learned not to believe in myself and that I could do or be better.

    I was unhappy, I was miserable.

    Then along came my daughter and I realised it isn’t about me anymore. It is about her and her future.

    That is when I started to listen to the motivational talks again, be inspired by reading again, and to believe in myself again. Because if I didn’t believe in myself no one else was going to!

    Plus I developed duck feathers. When ever some one puts me down or is negative to me trying to control me and squash me. I just shut off my hearing so I can’t hear them, I completely ignore what they are saying and use the words “OK if that is what you think”.

    I only listen to me and those that have walked the talk!

    And my quote that keeps me going:

    “Where there is a will, there is a way!”

    How true is that? I for one have a full array of excuses that come to mind whenever I don’t want to do something (washing up etc).

    Those are great quotes, I’ve made a note of a couple of them that I hadn’t heard before and I shall pin them on the wall by my desk.

    I’m sure we all feel like throwing the towel in sometimes but quitters never win, and if we give up we’ll never know how close we were to achieving our goals.

    I worked in a hospital for a while, and got to know an elderly patient, Samuel quite well.
    He used to tell me about his boyhood, experiences and life generally, and it was fascinating.
    But one day, shortly before he died, he said to me, “If only I’d . . . . . ”

    It underlines the fact that this isn’t a rehearsal. Take the opportunities. Whether you succeed or fail, you tried.

    Don’t find yourself saying “IF ONLY I’D . . . . . . . .”

    Internet Marketing seems to be all about persistence and perseverance, but for those that keep at it, will always find success. I like your comment about the Guru’s being those who started before we did, I agree.

    I find it sad for those that do give up and there a lot of them on the Internet, still I guess if you want to make it, then make it happen!

    You couldn’t be further from the truth, especially in the IM world. The main reason 95% of people fail to make money online is because they give up too easily. Those who remain persistent are the ones who succeed. For most it can be a matter of several years before they finally succeed. I’ve been at it almost two years now and only just made my first sale the other day. Was it worth it? hell yes! but there was days when i found myself in tears with sheer frustration. It only goes to say that you need to be very thick skinned to succeed online.
